Stormy weather, fallen tree

Storm Austen brought widespread UK disruption today, unleashing ferocious winds up to 80mph across southern England. Authorities urged residents to take precautions as the severe weather caused significant travel chaos and power outages.

The London Fire Brigade issued a stark warning to capital residents. They advised securing loose items in gardens and balconies. Furthermore, travellers should exercise extra caution on roads and pavements due to potential falling debris.

A yellow weather warning for wind remains active for parts of London until 9 pm. Gusts between 42 to 55mph are currently impacting the city. The Met Office initially issued this warning at 10 am, covering a large area of southern, central, and eastern England.

Across the Channel, Jersey experienced even stronger conditions. The island’s airport recorded a wind gust of 84mph just before 6 am. Officials warned that similar wind speeds could persist for several more hours.

The South West bore the brunt of the storm’s initial force. Winds reached up to 80mph in regions like Cornwall and Devon. An “amber” warning, indicating a danger to life, was in effect from 1 am until 10 am for these areas and the Isles of Scilly. Consequently, thousands of homes in Cornwall, Devon, and Wales suffered power cuts. Numerous schools also closed across Cornwall, Jersey, and Guernsey.

Travel networks faced considerable challenges. Fallen trees caused rush-hour disruption on several rail lines serving London, including services from Hampton Court to Waterloo. Moreover, routes between Clandon and Effingham in Surrey also saw significant delays. Southern Railway reported multiple line blockages, affecting services to Gatwick Airport and routes like Haywards Heath to Three Bridges.

Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong highlighted the particular risks. He noted that trees still in leaf were prone to falling, potentially obstructing roads and railways. Meanwhile, the London Ambulance Service reiterated warnings, advising commuters to allow extra time for journeys.

Looking ahead, a second weather system, Storm Boelo, will impact Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern England over the weekend. This storm is expected to bring powerful winds, potentially reaching 80mph in Scotland. The Met Office has warned of potential damage to buildings, flying debris, and dangerous coastal waves from both storms. Furthermore, mobile phone coverage and power supplies could be affected. This period of severe Storm Austen disruption is set against a backdrop of a predicted El Nino phenomenon, suggesting a wetter and wilder autumn season.
