Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe avoids jail after being sentenced for assaulting his ex-partner. The 30-year-old footballer received a community order following the attack. He had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The incident occurred on December 14 outside Amie Mayson’s home in Lambeth, south London. Ms Mayson confronted Ibe, demanding repayment of money she claimed he owed. Subsequently, an argument ensued.
During the confrontation, Ms Mayson reportedly called Ibe a “druggy.” He then grabbed her arm forcefully, the court heard. Afterwards, he pulled a braid from her hair.
Croydon Magistrates’ Court delivered its verdict on Friday. Instead of a custodial sentence, Jordon Ibe avoids jail time, receiving a 12-month community order. This includes 80 hours of unpaid work and 27 days of rehabilitation activity.
Furthermore, Ibe was ordered to pay a total fine of £764. This sum comprised a £114 surcharge and £650 in court costs. Representing himself, Ibe told the court: “I made a serious mistake.”
He added: “I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful.” Ibe stated he had “to look at myself in the mirror.” He concluded he “cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next.”
Prosecutor Aya Alshekhili highlighted the victim’s ordeal. Ms Mayson’s confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth were left “on the floor” by the attack, she stated.
In her victim impact statement, Ms Mayson expressed her feelings. She wished the court “to understand the impact that this incident has had.” The assault, she noted, significantly affected her “both physically and mentally.”
Despite ongoing “feelings of fear,” Ms Mayson also felt “compassion” for Ibe. She indicated forgiveness formed part of her “healing journey.” Ibe, from Chislehurst, initially denied the charge in March but pleaded guilty in July.
Prior to the assault, the pair had an on-off relationship. Ibe played 58 times for Liverpool, later featuring for Derby County, Birmingham City, and AFC Bournemouth. He also represented England at under-21 level.
More recently, he played for Lokomotiv Sofia in the Bulgarian First League until June. Before this move, he spent two years in non-league football.
