Two Iranian nationals have been charged with terror offences concerning an alleged Manchester terror plot to target the city’s Jewish community. Rahman Salehi, 35, from Salford, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, from Liverpool, are facing serious accusations. Authorities believe they were preparing or assisting an act of terrorism on or before September 20.

The men were arrested in Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter just before Yom Kippur, a deeply significant day in the Jewish calendar. Counter Terrorism Police (CTP) claim the suspects were in contact with an overseas third party, potentially based in Iran. Consequently, the investigation intensified.

CTP further alleges the men sought instructions to construct a chlorine bomb. They reportedly acquired necessary liquids, components, and equipment for such a device. Moreover, the accused conducted research into potential targets and undertook reconnaissance of various locations for an attack.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed deep distress regarding the news. She highlighted the timing, coming shortly after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and one year after the Heaton Park Synagogue attack. This tragic anniversary adds to the community’s anguish.

Ms. Mahmood also underscored the broader implications, stating these events remind the country of threats from both terrorists and foreign state actors. It is understood both suspects arrived in the UK via small boats in 2020 and 2023. One individual received asylum, while the other maintains an active asylum claim. Therefore, the Home Secretary reiterated the importance of tackling illegal migration.

As part of the ongoing inquiry, searches were conducted at addresses in Epworth Street, Liverpool, and Lancaster Road, Salford. Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods of Greater Manchester Police acknowledged the particular sensitivity of the timing. He assured the public of continued robust policing and visible officer presence within Jewish communities.

The two men are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. The legal proceedings will now begin.
