London coffee shops are pioneering a new era of digital transactions. They are introducing Pay with Smile facial recognition payments this week. This innovative system allows customers to pay for their purchases with a simple glance.
Digital financial firm Revolut is behind the new initiative. They are piloting the Pay with Smile feature at several participating businesses. The trial begins this Thursday across the capital.
Customers can initially experience the technology at Kiss the Hippo cafes. Locations include Bloomsbury, Chelsea, and Soho. The process is straightforward and quick.
First, users tap “Pay with Smile” on a Revolut Register screen. Subsequently, a facial identity check takes place. This verification mirrors the process used for unlocking smartphones or accessing banking applications.
The technology then confirms the customer’s identity. It compares their face against data provided during Revolut sign-up. A successful match promptly authorises an account-to-account payment.
Users must actively opt into the service. This is done through their Revolut app settings. Revolut assures customers that enrollment is never automatic. Moreover, consent can be withdrawn at any given time.
Alex Codina, General Manager of Merchant Payments at Revolut Business, commented on the rollout. He highlighted the system’s efficiency. Codina stated it combines high-performance processing with facial recognition. This aims to replace older systems with a hyper-efficient checkout. It addresses common issues for both consumers and merchants.
Security is a primary concern. Facial recognition data receives end-to-end encryption. Participating merchants will not store personal data. This ensures robust privacy protections.
Kiss the Hippo Coffee expressed enthusiasm for the new system. Managing Director Alex Damgaci anticipates a positive reception. Guests can try Pay with Smile at the three initial cafes. The company plans to expand the feature across all 12 of its cafes later this year.
Revolut is also offering incentives for adoption. They are providing 0% processing fees on Pay with Smile transactions. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens for independent venues. It further promotes the widespread use of this new payment method.
