Queen Camilla recently celebrated the remarkable reopening of the Spellow Community Library in Liverpool. This facility had been severely damaged during local riots in summer 2024. The unrest, which began on County Road, followed stabbings in Southport, triggering widespread disorder.
Her Majesty lauded the community’s extraordinary efforts in bringing the library “from the ashes.” She described its recovery as a “happy ending” to a terrible story. During her visit on Friday, the Queen unveiled a commemorative plaque.
Moreover, she generously donated more books, adding to previous contributions made during the restocking phase. She remarked to attendees, “You can never have too many books.” Sean McEvoy, a library assistant, read to schoolchildren alongside the Queen. He expressed immense pride in the community’s positive response.
“So many positives came from what happened,” Mr. McEvoy stated. “We now focus much more on the positives out of it.” Children’s author Frank Cottrell-Boyce also shared a poem before the plaque’s unveiling. He informed the Queen that children wished for the Spellow name to remain after a workshop.
Mr. Cottrell-Boyce highlighted the library’s role as a “powerful story of resilience and hope.” He further noted the profound significance of sharing books for children’s development. The Spellow Community Library’s restoration was significantly boosted by a public fundraiser.
Alex McCormick initiated an online campaign aiming for £500. Astonishingly, the initiative raised a quarter of a million pounds, proving the community’s commitment to the Spellow Community Library. Ms. McCormick affirmed the library’s vital role within the community.
Mayor Steve Rotheram of the Liverpool City Region also attended, calling the hub a “powerful example” of community spirit. During her visit, the Queen engaged with pupils from local schools, including St Francis De Sales Catholic Junior School and Arnot St Mary Primary School. She assisted them with colouring and wordsearch activities.
Later, she joined children learning chess, even picking up a dropped piece. Additionally, Her Majesty spoke with police and fire service first responders. She viewed images of the extensive damage caused by the blaze.
Later that day, Camilla continued her engagements in Liverpool. She visited Speke Hall, meeting Dame Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo. There, she joined families for a storytelling session featuring the beloved character. She also connected with local literacy partners, supporting early years education.
